Week 1
Intro
My name is Katie and I have been teaching for 7 years. My career started in Springfield, Massachusetts where I taught middle school math for a couple years, and currently I am teaching in New York City. I am currently teaching high school Algebra. My future goal is to move to Connecticut and continue to teach high school math.
ISTE Standard:
1.5.b. collect data or identify relevant data sets, use digital tools to analyze them, and represent data in various ways to facilitate problem-solving and decision-making.
NYC Standard:
AI-S.ID.3 Interpret differences in shape, center, and spread in the context of the data sets,
accounting for possible effects of extreme data points (outliers).
Lesson Idea:
To address both of these standards, students could work in groups or partners and create a statistical question that they would like to collect data on about the class. Then, they could collect the data for the question using their classmates. Using Excel, students could input the data using this technology. They could find the 5 number summary and make conclusions about the data. To account for extreme data points, they could add an extra value that is either way too big or too small and conclude how that affects the data set. Using Excel as the technology, students can easily organize the data, analyze using graphs, and make decisions on which is the best way to represent the data.
Kolb's Triple E FrameworkDiscussion:
After reading the Kolb's Triple E Framework, using Excel would be able to enhance, engage, and extend student thinking. Since excel creates the space for students to quickly input data and find summary statistics so quickly, it enhances their experience with this standard. When students have to use ti-84's for this process, they will get discouraged or they will lose the bigger picture. In addition, Excel's ability to create different representations will engage students' thinking. There is limited representations accessible with their calculators, so this will definitely keep students engaged with the many possibilities of graphs and charts. Along with the different possibilities Excel has to offer with representations, it also gives students access to extending their thinking further. They are able to explore on their own with colors and new variables that can deepen their thinking and understanding.
I am excited to see another math teacher in this class. I am currently in middle school math, but I love this idea for data points. I have used this in my seventh-grade class, but I could definitely teach them more about what they can do on Excel. The standard in Oklahoma actually requires the use of technology to collect and display data. The idea of using Excel will help them when they start adult jobs. Many fields would appreciate their knowledge.

I love your lesson idea. Having students collect and analyze their own data makes statistics so much more meaningful. Using Excel is such a smart choice, it engages students visually and helps them see patterns instantly. I use similar tools in radiology when we analyze image data, so I really connected with your post.
